DEPARTMENT OF ANAESTHESIOLOGY: WHEN SECONDS COUNT....

The importance of the Department of Anaesthesiology in any hospital cannot be overstated. In fact, it is inconceivable to expect any hospital to function satisfactorily without contribution from the Department of Anaesthesiology; be it the Emergency, the Operating Room, Critical Care Areas or the Pain Clinic. Anaesthesiologists play a defining role in each and every one of these areas, so much so that, Anaesthesiologists have come to be known as “Peri-Operative Physicians”.

Our Anaesthesiology team has great credentials which include vast clinical and teaching experience, publications in Anaesthesiology journals of repute and being Examiners to various Universities in India. The practice of Anaesthesiology is a skill and an art and who better than our faculty members, having decades of experience in the field, to benefit the patients and our students with their ocean of knowledge and experience. It is a tribute to their dedication and excellence that the Department has secured 10 Post Graduate seats starting with the Academic Year 2019.

The Department has a spacious Museum depicting the progress of Anaesthesiology through the ages to the current times. It is equipped with various teaching aids like mannequins and models for demonstration to the students besides displaying a large number of charts and pictures wherein students can get a glimpse of the past.

Students will be witnessing our expert team catering to major Operation Theaters (OTs) and minor OTs. Our OTs are state of the art with most modern anaesthesia & surgery equipments which include Bronchoscopes, Flexible Fiberoptic Laryngoscopes (FFOL) and dedicated C-ARMs for intraoperative imaging. All the OTs have Central Heating/ Air Conditioning with Laminar Flow and are fitted with HEPA Filters and state of the art Halogen/LED OT Lights. Our OTs are fitted with CCTV cameras for direct transmission of ongoing surgeries to the Observation Galleries where students can observe the various surgical procedures without actually entering the OTs. This ensures practical teaching to the students while maintaining the sterile atmosphere of the OTs.

The Department of Anaesthesiology also provides its expertise in various Critical Areas like the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit (RICU), Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU), the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), the Emergency & Resuscitation Ward and, of course, the Pre Anaesthesia Checkup (PAC) & Pain Clinics. We provide pain services in the form of epidural and nerve blocks including Trans Foraminal Blocks & Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA). Our department also provides anaesthesia in remote locations like MRI, CT Scan, ECT and Endoscopy suites. The department organizes extensive academic programs which includes case discussions and debates on interesting cases.

Conferences

The Department takes pride in that our faculty members constantly strive to upgrade themselves and keep themselves up to date with the latest happenings and researches in the field of Anaesthesiology by attending various National and Regional Conferences. Our faculty members have delivered many Guest Lectures and Chaired Scientific Sessions at various National and Regional levels.

The Department of Anaesthesiology successfully organized the 4th HP Chapter ISA Conference on the 5th & 6th of September, 2015.

The Department also organized a CME: Ameliorating Pain on the 30th of March, 2018 wherein guest faculty from reputed hospitals in Chandigarh enriched the audience with their experiences.

Hospital Services

The Department of Anaesthesiology caters to the needs of all surgical and medical specialties and handles both elective and emergency cases on a routine basis. Emergency cases are handled 24 x 7 on a priority basis. A dedicated PAC Clinic functions on all working days and all the patients are assessed thoroughly before deciding the choice & route of anaesthesia. The Pain Clinic is run on every Saturday.

Our team of anaesthesiologists strives relentlessly for the safe administration of anaesthesia, and recovery therefrom, for patients reporting for major abdominal and Laparoscopic surgeries, Joint Replacements like Total Knee Replacement and Total Hip Replacement, Arthroscopic Surgeries, Spine surgery, fracture fixations, endoscopic sinus surgery and other surgical & endoscopic procedures.

Our team provides anaesthesia for Super-specialties like Paediatric Surgery (including Newborns), Urosurgery & Oromaxillofacial Surgery. Many of the surgical procedures involve a difficult airway for which we have Flexible Fiberoptic Laryngoscopes to aid in successful airway management.

Students will, thus, be exposed to a variety of anaesthesia techniques like general anaesthesia, regional anaesthesia, total intravenous anaesthesia, nerve blocks and Monitored Anaesthesia Care. They will also be trained in resuscitation techniques like Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Airway Management & Critical Care Techniques like Ventilator Management, Arterial Blood Gas Analysis, Central Venous Lines, etc.
