The Psychiatry is an important services being provided for holistic care to the patient as per Bio psychosocial model of illness as per WHO definition. Every ill patient has both Physical and Psychological aspects and vice versa and are closely interlinked for complete holistic care for the patients visiting the hospital.

Department of Psychiatry provides basic Psychological health services in diagnosis and management of patients along with consultation Psychiatric services to all the departments of hospital. Department is working round the clock 24x7 taking psychiatric care to outpatients and inpatients at the hospital.

The department is also providing, Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), Electroencephalography (EEG), Multiple Behavior Therapy (MBT) and Biofeedback to the Patients.

It also provides Psycho- Diagnostic and Counselling services to the students and the patients. It also brings the student to become aware of both Psychological health and illness of the patients and their families.

The Faculty members in addition to teaching, also attend regular continuing medical education (CME) and national conferences held in the country and update their knowledge to impart to the students.

Curriculum :- The undergraduate teaching programme trains students in Psychiatric skills and respect for human life and humane attitude as clinician. Their Curriculum includes regular bed side clinic teaching followed by regular assessment. Students are taught to arrive at diagnosis by logical thinking and management by evidence based therapy. They are exposed to the interviewing technique, assessment and diagnosis of Psychiatric illness.

Research & Projects: The department has initiated several projects on personality disorders and on prenatal and postnatal Psychiatric disorder in Collaboration with department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Department has also started special clinics on Substance Use Treatment Clinic, Memory Clinic, Psychosexual clinic, Geriaritic Clinic, Psychosomatic Clinic, and Family Therapy clinic once a week.

Community Psychiatric Services :- The department is also Providing Psychiatric Services to the community at Urban Health Centre Solan, once a week. It has also been regularly attending medical camps in the rural areas to provide Psychiatric service to the rural population.
