Forensic Medicine

Forensic Medicine is known as “the science which teaches the application of medical knowledge for the purpose of the law”. The subject of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology is taught in III, IV and V term to students during MBBS course. Objectives of this department are to teach Forensic Medicine to students in a meaningful and enjoyable manner. The syllabus taught is in accordance with the syllabus prescribed by Medical Council of India. The students are taught regarding Medical law and Ethics, Death and Postmortem Changes, Asphyxial deaths, Injuries, Sexual Offences and related issues, Forensic Psychiatry, Toxicology and other topics of medico legal importance.

Sooner or later every practitioner of medicine will be faced with medico-legal problems which will demand, in addition to his technical skills, knowledge of the law, a broad insight into the behavior of people and a detailed understanding of the ways of life in the particular population that he serves.

Department of Forensic Medicine has been introducing new methods of teaching with an emphasis on learning in an integrated manner with conferences, workshops and CMEs. The department also conducts activities to improve reasoning skills, team work and presentations skills.

The department has a fully functional modern Mortuary Complex and undertakes Medicolegal and Postmortem work in the jurisdictional area allotted to it by the government of Himachal Pradesh. In addition to the under graduate teaching by the department the Medical Council Of India has permitted post graduate student intake for three seats of “M.D.- Forensic Medicine”.

Apart from the Central Research Lab of the institute the Department of Forensic Medicine has a fully equipped research laboratory to carry out research projects. Faculty has diverse research interests with inter departmental participation covering many subspecialties of Forensic Medicine, related subjects and medical education.
