Microbiology

The Department of Microbiology was established in the year 2013 at the time of inspection of Maharishi Markandeshwar Medical College & Hospital, Solan.

It is a multidisciplinary unit consisting of Bacteriology, Virology, Immunology, Mycology Bacteriology, Parasitology & Mycobacteriology sections.

The laboratory facilities include conventional microbiological tools as well as state of the art ELISA, BACTEC & MGIT system for diagnostic services.

Objectives:

1. To develop state of art facility, in terms of quality, infrastructure and trained manpower so as to enable the students of medical Microbiology to appreciate the etiology, immunopathogenesis & laboratory diagnosis of common infectious diseases
2. To deliver timely and accurate diagnostic services to patients
3. To create an environment for need based quality research among faculty and students

Academic activities: Teaching is an integral part of the department academic activity. It offers excellent opportunities for research in infection diseases. Following are the recognized courses conducted in the department

1. MBBS
2. Post-Graduate Teaching course: MD (Microbiology) with effect from academic year 2017-18 and MSc ( Medical Microbiology) with effect from academic year 2018-19
3. Paramedical course like BSc (MLT) with effect from academic year 2018-19.Inter-Departmental Academics: Regular discussions, seminars, journal reviews, workshops and presentations by Faculty
4. Students are encouraged to participate in various activities like poster presentation, workshops, quizzes and declamation on various occasions like World TB day, World AIDS day, etc

Laboratory Services Provided:

1. Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory Services
2. 24 hours emergency laboratory services
3. It has a highly functional facilitated integrated counseling and testing centre (FICTC) for HIV testing and Counseling
4. TB diagnostic and referral services under RNTCP
5. The department offers 24 hrs Microbiology laboratory services to the entire hospital, outreach programs, peripheral health care centers & sister institutions.

Research activities:
The department is actively involved in research activities keeping in view the thrust area recognized by the ICMR & WHO.
